Asia’s biggest iron deposit found in China’s Liaoning province.
Asia’s biggest iron ore deposit, with reserves of more than 3 billion metric tons, was found in China’s northern province of Liaoning, according to a local government. The Dataigou deposit, located near Benxi city, has material with iron content of between 25 percent and 62 percent, the Benxi government said in an e-mailed statement, confirming a China News Agency report.
ArcelorMittal is eyeing a restart of some facilities in the United States in response to an uptick in steel demand, said the firm's chief executive. Lakshmi Mittal said his company has seen a modest improvement in U.S. markets in recent weeks. ArcelorMittal's plants there have been operating at an average 50 per cent capacity. But it is unclear whether that increase in demand is sustainable, he cautioned.

Severstal North America Inc. said it has signed a letter of intent to sell its Allenport, Washington County, plant to a California-based company that wants to reopen the plant this fall with about 75 workers. Severstal expects to complete the deal in August with North American Trading Co. of Chino Hills, Calif., which is owned by William R. Kingston.

India. Steel ministry proposes 15% export levy on iron ore.
Steel ministry has proposed to the finance ministry to reimpose 15% export duty on iron ore (lumps and fines) in order to increase the availability of ore for domestic steel makers. Iron ore is a key input in steel making. In addition, the steel ministry has recommended levy of 15% duty on imports of hot rolled coils (HRCs), which is used mainly by construction and automobile sectors.
